How To Clean Concrete Driveway?

Concrete driveway tends to attract a lot of dirt, debris, oil and grease stains, and tyre marks. Since concrete is also slightly porous, it leads to the formation of stains caused by the absorption of liquids such as oil. Apart from sweeping away the debris from the surface, a concrete driveway also needs a thorough cleaning from time to time. Poorly maintained driveway spoils the aesthetics of the house. Thus, it is important to keep the concrete driveway in spick and span condition.

Some of the ways to clean a concrete driveway have been discussed here.

Power wash

Power wash eliminates oil stains, weeds, and dirt particles present on the nooks and crannies of the concrete driveway. First, remove all the loose debris and other materials such as stones and dust from the concrete surface. Thereafter, pour the concrete cleaner in the detergent tank of the pressure washer. The instructions which come with the pressure washer give information about the type of cleaner which can be used in it. The pressure washer comes with high-pressure and low-pressure nozzles. Use the low-pressure nozzle to apply the cleaner on the surface of the concrete driveway. Hold the wand 12 inches from the surface and move back and forth on the driveway as you apply the cleaner. Allow the cleaner to settle for 15 minutes. Finally, use a high-pressure nozzle, set the power washer to rinse mode, and wash away the cleaner from the concrete surface. You need to ensure that the cleaner is eliminated from the driveway. Care needs to be taken that the power washer is not directed at a single spot for more than 10 seconds to avoid damage to the concrete.

Tackling oil stains

If the major problem with the concrete driveway is the staining by oil and other liquids spilled by vehicles, then common household items can be used. These include baking soda, oven cleaners, and detergents used for clothes. Coca Cola can also be used. Apply these things on the stained surface and leave it overnight. After that, spray the area with water followed by thorough rinsing.

In the case of stubborn stains, a heavy-duty commercial stain cleaner is required, for example, Trisodium Phosphate. This is a highly potent stain remover that breaks up oil, grease, and other liquid stains for easy removal. You need to add 1 cup of TSP to a gallon of water and use a garden sprayer to apply the solution on the concrete driveway. After 15-20 minutes, scrub the concrete with a brush followed by rinsing with water using a hose.

Bleach solution

The solution of bleach in water is effective in removing mildew. Mildew is a fungus which grows on the surface of concrete due to water deposit in crevices or due to dampness of the concrete driveway in certain areas. Mildew makes the driveway slippery. Apply bleach solution on the mildew infested areas. Thereafter, sweep the areas followed by hosing using water.

Soap solution

Soap solution is suitable for the general cleaning of the concrete driveway. Apply soap water on the concrete using a stiff scrub brush using a circular motion. After that, rinse the driveway with water using a garden hose to obliterate the soapy water.
